Heat Your House Safely
Each year,
people die from house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning
because of improper use of supplemental heat sources like
space heaters, kerosene heaters or fireplaces. If you plan
to use any of these heat sources this winter:
- Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Keep an eye on your heat source at all times.
- Keep heat sources well away from flammable materials.
- Have your chimney and/or wood stove professionally cleaned
and inspected annually.
Remember:
- Space heaters should be operated at
least three feet away from furniture, blankets or other
flammable objects. Without proper ventilation, liquid-fueled
space heaters, like kerosene heaters, can cause a buildup
of carbon monoxide, resulting in death.
- Fireplaces can cause fires if they are
not used, tended to, cleaned and inspected properly.
- Wood stoves can cause fires if improperly
used or maintained.
